In this week’s one-minute nugget video, I use Amy Adams from the movie Arrival for the demonstration. I show how to use only three values in a black and white study. It takes some serious self-discipline to use such a limited pallet! But it’s worth it because you’ll end up with a solid plan to follow when you start your final piece. When your study sketch stands on its own with minimal grey scale, and tells the story you’re striving for, feel free to give yourself two ‘bonus’ values on both ends of the spectrum. One highlight and one dark accent. Remember this is still only black and white, no color. Then I promise when you start painting for real, it will be a total pleasure because you’ve worked out 90% of the problems.
Happy painting! Tommy
